The Benefits of Having an EIN Number

As major events such as Sundance and Super Bowl come up, it becomes much easier to travel for events as a brand ambassador. Many agencies pull from different regions and even offer to compensate for travel expenses. For this reason, among others, it is very beneficial to have an EIN or Employer Identification Number.

It is HYPE’s policy to request Federal ID numbers (EIN) from all Independent Contractors participating in multi-state tours, or in states other than the state they are currently living in, especially if that state is California. As defined from the IRS, an EIN number or an employer identification number is a nine-digit number assigned by the IRS and used to identify the tax accounts of employers and certain others who have no employees. The IRS uses the number to identify taxpayers that are required to file various business tax returns.

Being an Independent Contractor gives you the opportunity to be registered, for tax purposes, as a Sole Proprietor (owner of your own business).   As a Sole Proprietor, when filing your taxes, you may have the ability to deduct certain expenses related to your independent brand ambassador work, or any other type of independent work.  Check with your state and local agencies, or your tax advisor for further information on this if needed.

The IRS has made it simple and free to obtain an EIN! By copying this web address into your browser, you can apply for, and immediately obtain your own EIN. Instead of giving out your Social Security Number for independent work, you can use your EIN. You will be able to work with Hype in any state using your EIN.

***Talent Tip***

If you decide to obtain an EIN, please send an updated W-9 Form with your EIN, to Accounting@TheHypeAgency.com. We will update your records to remove your Social Security Number and replace it with your new EIN.
